  • Maya Train Workers in Playa del Carmen Protest Over Unpaid Promised Bonus

A new setback has emerged in the construction of the Maya Train, as workers hired by the company Alstom have launched a sit-in strike in Playa del Carmen.

The reason behind the protest is the company’s failure to pay a promised bonus of 7,000 pesos, which was offered in lieu of profit-sharing.

The bonus was negotiated by Section 37 of the Mexican Railway Workers Union (STFRM), after Alstom reported zero profits in its tax filings. The payment was scheduled for Monday, June 2, 2025, but was not made, prompting workers to suspend activities in protest.

Employees have voiced frustration not only with the company but also with the union, which they accuse of failing to adequately support them in demanding compliance with the agreement. The situation has raised concerns, as it could affect the overall timeline of the Maya Train megaproject, which aims to connect five states in southeastern Mexico.

The protest in Playa del Carmen adds to other similar demonstrations along different sections of the Maya Train, such as in Escárcega, Campeche, where workers have also halted activities demanding the compensatory bonus.

So far, neither Alstom nor the STFRM has issued official statements regarding the situation. Workers are hoping the payment will be made in the coming hours so they can return to work and prevent further delays in the construction of the Maya Train.
